Synopsis

Introduction: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) encompasses a spectrum of liver pathologies caused by excessive alcohol consumption, including steatosis, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. ALD impacts lipid metabolism and thyroid function, both of which are crucial for maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Understanding the interplay between lipid profile and thyroid function in ALD can aid in disease assessment and management.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To study the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidemia in Alcoholic liver disease
  • To evaluate the correlation between lipid profile and Alcoholic liver disease
  • To evaluate the correlation between thyroid function tests and Alcoholic liver disease
  • To study the significance of lipid profile and thyroid function tests with the severity of alcoholic liver disease.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 120 ALD patients and 50 healthy controls. Serum lipid parameters (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL) and thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4) were measured. ALD severity was categorized into steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis based on clinical and biochemical criteria. Statistical analysis assessed differences between groups and correlations between lipid profile, thyroid function, and disease severity.

Results: ALD patients showed significantly altered lipid profiles, with elevated triglycerides and reduced HDL levels compared to controls (p < 0.01). Thyroid function tests revealed subclinical hypothyroidism in 30% of cases, with T3 levels inversely correlated with disease severity (p < 0.05). Advanced stages of ALD, particularly cirrhosis, exhibited more pronounced lipid and thyroid abnormalities.

Conclusion: Lipid profile and thyroid dysfunction are prevalent in ALD and correlate with disease severity. Monitoring these parameters can provide valuable insights into disease progression and guide therapeutic interventions.
