Synopsis

Introduction: Lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) is a commonly performed procedure in obstetrics, but wound infections remain a major concern, leading to maternal morbidity. Understanding the risk factors and complications associated with LSCS wound infections can help improve patient outcomes. This study aims to explore the risk factors contributing to wound infections and assess the complications that arise from them in a tertiary care setting.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To identify the risk factors associated with lower segment caesarean section wound infection in a tertiary care centre.
  2. To identify the complications associated with lower segment caesarean section wound infection in a tertiary care centre.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital, involving women who underwent LSCS over a specific period. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, medical history, intraoperative factors, and post-operative complications were collected. Wound infections were diagnosed through clinical evaluation and microbiological testing. Statistical analysis was used to identify significant risk factors and complications associated with wound infections.

Results: The study found that common risk factors for wound infections included obesity, diabetes mellitus, prolonged labor, and emergency caesarean sections. Infected patients experienced complications such as delayed wound healing, wound dehiscence, sepsis, and increased length of hospital stay.

Conclusion: The findings highlight that wound infections following LSCS are influenced by several modifiable risk factors. Early identification of at-risk patients and appropriate preventive measures can help reduce the incidence of infections and improve maternal health outcomes.
