Introduction: Corrosive ingestion can cause severe damage to the gastrointestinal tract, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The complexity of injury necessitates a multidisciplinary approach for effective management, including conservative, endoscopic, and surgical interventions. This study aims to evaluate the definitive management modalities employed for post-corrosive ingestion patients in a tertiary care setting.
1. To evaluate various operatives modalities for corrosive esophageal stricture who undergone definitive surgery like gastric pull up, jejunal or colonic interposition .
2. To study outcomes of different definitive surgical procedure.
3. To study the complications, follow up for the functional results and outcomes occuring after surgical management.
Aims and Objectives:
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients treated for corrosive ingestion at a tertiary care hospital in South Gujarat over five years. Data were collected from medical records, including demographics, nature of the ingested substance, clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, treatment modalities, and outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the efficacy and complications associated with different approaches.
Results: A total of 120 cases were reviewed. Acid ingestion accounted for 65% of cases, and alkali ingestion for 35%. Conservative management was successful in 45% of patients, while 35% required endoscopic dilatation, and 20% underwent surgical reconstruction. Complications included strictures (40%) and perforations (15%). Early intervention and tailored management improved patient outcomes significantly.
Conclusion: The choice of management modality depends on the severity and extent of injury. Timely diagnosis and individualized treatment are crucial for optimal recovery. This study underscores the importance of a structured approach to managing corrosive ingestion cases in tertiary care settings.
