Synopsis

Introduction: Postuveitic cataracts, a common sequela of chronic intraocular inflammation, present surgical challenges and require careful management to optimize visual outcomes. Surgical complications and postoperative inflammation can significantly influence recovery and visual rehabilitation in these patients.

Aims and Objectives:

Aim

To assess the outcome of cataract surgery in eyes of patients with uveitis.

Objectives

  1. To assess intra operative and post operative complications encountered in uveitic cataract.
  2. To assess the final visual outcome in uveitic cataract.

Methods: This prospective observational study included patients diagnosed with postuveitic cataracts who underwent cataract surgery at a tertiary care center. Preoperative evaluations included visual acuity, anterior chamber activity, and intraocular pressure. Intraoperative data on surgical techniques, complications, and challenges were recorded. Postoperative outcomes, including complications, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and resolution of inflammation, were assessed at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Data were analyzed to identify factors influencing outcomes.

Results: Preliminary findings suggest that intraoperative challenges include posterior synechiae and fragile posterior capsules. Common postoperative complications were persistent inflammation and macular edema. However, with adequate preoperative control of inflammation and tailored surgical approaches, 70% of patients achieved significant improvement in BCVA (≥6/12) at 3 months. Factors negatively affecting outcomes included uncontrolled preoperative inflammation and severe pre-existing ocular comorbidities.

Conclusion: With meticulous preoperative planning and postoperative care, cataract surgery in postuveitic patients can achieve favorable visual outcomes despite inherent challenges. This study underscores the importance of inflammation control and tailored management in optimizing surgical results.
