Synopsis

Introduction: Optimal wound closure following thyroidectomy is crucial for minimizing complications, enhancing cosmetic outcomes, and improving patient satisfaction. Adhesive strips offer a non-invasive alternative to traditional sutures, potentially reducing infection rates and improving wound healing. However, their efficacy in thyroidectomy wounds remains understudied.

Aims and Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of adhesive strips compared to conventional sutures for wound closure in thyroidectomy patients. Primary objectives include assessing wound healing, cosmetic outcomes, and patient satisfaction. Secondary objectives include analyzing infection rates, scar formation, and closure time.

Methods: This prospective randomized controlled trial included 100 patients undergoing thyroidectomy. Participants were randomized into two groups: adhesive strip closure (n=50) and conventional suture closure (n=50). Wound healing was assessed using the Southampton wound grading system, cosmetic outcomes using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS), and infection rates over a 30-day follow-up.

Results: The adhesive strip group demonstrated significantly shorter closure times (mean reduction of 20%), improved cosmetic outcomes with better POSAS scores, and a comparable infection rate to the suture group (5% vs. 6%). Patient satisfaction was higher in the adhesive strip group, with 85% reporting excellent outcomes. No significant differences in wound dehiscence were observed.

Conclusion: Adhesive strips provide a safe and effective alternative to sutures for wound closure after thyroidectomy, offering superior cosmetic results and high patient satisfaction. Their use can streamline surgical workflows and improve postoperative care.
