Synopsis

Introduction: Corneal blindness is a significant public health challenge, and eye donation is essential to restoring vision in affected individuals. Despite awareness campaigns, the gap between the demand and availability of donor corneas persists. Counseling plays a crucial role in influencing patients' attitudes toward eye donation. This study evaluates the impact of structured eye donation counseling on patients' willingness to pledge for eye donation in a tertiary care hospital.

Aims and Objectives:

Aim:

To study the impact of eye donation counsellor on willingness of patients for eye donation in a tertiary care hospital.

Objective:

  • To assess patient’s willingness to donate eyes.
  • To assess the impact of counselling on conversion rate
  • To study the reasons for poor donation rates
  • To analyze the motivating factors and barriers for eye donation

Methods: A prospective study was conducted on patients and their attendants in a tertiary care hospital. Participants received structured counseling sessions covering the importance of eye donation, eligibility criteria, and the donation process. Pre- and post-counseling willingness to pledge for eye donation was recorded and analyzed. Factors influencing decisions, including religious and cultural beliefs, were also assessed.

Results: A significant increase in willingness to donate eyes was observed post-counseling (p<0.05). Lack of awareness and misconceptions were identified as major barriers. Personalized counseling effectively addressed concerns and improved donation intent.

Conclusion: Eye donation counseling significantly enhances patients’ willingness to pledge for eye donation. Integrating structured counseling programs into hospital settings can bridge the gap between awareness and actual commitment, thereby increasing corneal donation rates.
