Synopsis

Introduction: Tibial condylar fractures are common intra-articular injuries resulting from high-energy trauma, such as road traffic accidents or falls. These fractures can lead to significant functional impairment if not managed appropriately. Recent advancements in implant design and surgical techniques have improved outcomes. The lateral condylar plate is widely used for fixation, offering stable anatomical reduction and early mobilization. This study evaluates the functional outcomes of tibial condylar fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) using a lateral condylar plate.

Aims and Objectives: To study the functional outcome of tibial condylar fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation or minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis(MIPPO) using lateral condylar plate

Methods: This prospective study was conducted at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, over 18 months. A total of 20 patients aged above 18 years with closed or Grade I/II open tibial condylar fractures were included. Patients underwent ORIF or MIPPO with a lateral condylar plate. Follow-ups at 6, 12, and 24 weeks assessed functional outcomes using the Modified Rasmussen Criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v22.0.

Results: Preliminary findings suggest that lateral condylar plating provides excellent fracture stability, allowing early weight-bearing and rehabilitation. Most patients achieved good to excellent functional outcomes, with minimal complications such as infection or knee stiffness.

Conclusion: Lateral condylar plating is an effective treatment modality for tibial condylar fractures, promoting early recovery and favorable functional outcomes. Continued research will further validate its long-term benefits.
