Synopsis

Introduction: Acute intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency, with strangulation representing a severe and life-threatening complication. Strangulation leads to compromised blood flow to the affected bowel, resulting in tissue necrosis and potentially sepsis. Early identification and prompt intervention are crucial to improve patient outcomes. This study aims to analyze the incidence, clinical presentation, and outcomes of strangulation in cases of acute intestinal obstruction.

Aims and Objective:

  1. To identify the incidence of strangulation in acute intestinal obstruction among the patients presenting to GGH, Kakinada.
  2. To identify various clinical, radiologicalandbiochemical parameters to predict the risk of strangulation in acute intestinal obstruction.

Methods: A retrospective review of medical records from patients diagnosed with acute intestinal obstruction over a 5-year period was conducted. Cases of strangulation were identified, and demographic data, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, surgical interventions, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed.

Results: Out of 150 patients with acute intestinal obstruction, 45 (30%) had strangulation. The most common causes were hernias (40%) and volvulus (35%). Strangulation was associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates, particularly in patients with delayed diagnosis. Early surgical intervention led to better outcomes, with a significantly lower complication rate.

Conclusion: Strangulation is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in acute intestinal obstruction. Timely diagnosis and surgical management are essential to improving patient prognosis. The findings highlight the need for heightened clinical awareness and prompt intervention in suspected strangulation cases.
