Synopsis

Introduction: Alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) significantly impacts not only the individuals affected but also their families, particularly spouses. Spouses of individuals with ADS often experience increased psychological distress, sleep disturbances, and caregiver burden. Poor sleep quality is associated with heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, further deteriorating overall well-being. However, there is limited research on the extent of sleep disturbances and their correlation with caregiver burden in this population.

Aims and Objectives

Aim

This study aims to asses quality of sleep in spouses of alcohol dependent patients.

Objectives

  • Assessment of quality of sleep in spouses of patients with alcohol dependence syndrome.
  • To identify the major cause for sleeplessness in spouses of patients with alcohol dependence syndrome
  • To assess the care giver burden on spouses of patients with alcohol dependence syndrome.
  • Assess the dependence severity using ICD 11 criteria

Methods: A cross-sectional study will be conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Ernakulam over 1.5 years. The study population includes spouses of ADS patients attending the psychiatry outpatient and inpatient departments. Sleep quality will be assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), while caregiver burden will be evaluated using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Psychiatric disorders contributing to sleep disturbances will be screened using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). The severity of alcohol dependence in patients will be classified based on ICD-11 criteria. Statistical analysis will be performed using SPSS software, with a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results: The study is expected to demonstrate a significant association between ADS severity, caregiver burden, and sleep disturbances in spouses, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

Conclusion: Addressing sleep disturbances in spouses of ADS patients through psychoeducation and mental health interventions may improve their well-being and coping abilities, benefiting both patients and caregivers.
