Synopsis

Introduction: Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) is a common pediatric kidney disorder characterized
by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, and hyperlipidemia. Alterations in serum lipid profiles
are a hallmark of NS and may contribute to long-term cardiovascular complications. This study
evaluates serum lipid profile changes in children with NS at Sri Krishna Medical College and
Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India.
Aims and Objectives: The primary objective was to assess serum lipid profile abnormalities in
children with NS and compare the findings with healthy controls. Additionally, the study aimed
to analyze the correlation between lipid abnormalities and disease severity.
Methods: This hospital-based observational study included pediatric NS patients diagnosed
based on clinical and biochemical criteria. Serum lipid levels, including total cholesterol,
triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), were
measured and compared with age-matched healthy controls. Statistical analysis was conducted to
determine significant differences and correlations.
Results: Children with NS exhibited significantly elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides, and
LDL levels, whereas HDL levels were reduced compared to controls (p<0.05). Hyperlipidemia
severity correlated with disease progression, emphasizing its role as a potential prognostic
marker.
Conclusion: Serum lipid abnormalities are prevalent in pediatric NS and may predispose
patients to future cardiovascular risks. Regular lipid monitoring and early intervention may help
mitigate complications. Further research is needed to explore lipid-lowering therapeutic
strategies in pediatric NS management.
