Synopsis

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with significant microvascular
complications, including retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. Early identification of these
complications is essential for preventing disease progression. This study aims to assess the
correlation between mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW), and
microvascular complications in T2DM patients.
Aims and Objectives:
Aim:
This study's goal is to determine how microvascular complications, red cell width distribution,
and mean platelet volume are related in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Objectives:
1. This research aim is to compare individuals with good and poor glycemic control of type 2
diabetes mellitus in terms of the mean platelet volume and the width of the red cell distribution.
2. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between mean platelet volume
and red cell width, with microvascular complications of diabetes. ( retinopathy, nephropathy,
neuropathy).
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 226 T2DM patients at SRM Medical
College Hospital & Research Centre. Various hematological and biochemical parameters,
including MPV, RDW, HbA1c, fasting and postprandial blood glucose, lipid profile, and spot
urine albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), were measured. Ophthalmic and neurological evaluations
were also performed.
Results: The findings indicate a significant correlation between MPV, RDW, and microvascular
complications in T2DM. Patients with poor glycemic control had higher MPV and RDW values,
suggesting their potential role as predictive markers.
Conclusion: MPV and RDW may serve as cost-effective, non-invasive biomarkers for
diagnosing microvascular complications in T2DM. Their routine assessment could aid in early
intervention and better disease management.
