Introduction: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common gynecological condition affecting
women of reproductive age, significantly impacting their quality of life. It can result from
various causes, including hormonal imbalances, structural abnormalities, and coagulation
disorders. The Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS) has emerged as an
effective, long-term, and minimally invasive treatment for AUB. This study aims to evaluate the
efficacy of LNG-IUS in managing AUB in women aged 35-50 years.
Aims and Objectives
To assess the effectiveness of LNG-IUS in reducing menstrual blood loss in women with
AUB.
To evaluate patient satisfaction and adherence to LNG-IUS therapy.
To analyze changes in menstrual patterns, hemoglobin levels, and endometrial thickness
following LNG-IUS insertion.
Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at N.S.C.B. Medical College,
Jabalpur, involving 55 women aged 35-50 years with AUB. Participants underwent LNG-IUS
insertion and were followed up at 1.5, 3, and 6 months. Parameters assessed included menstrual
flow, frequency, regularity, hemoglobin levels, and endometrial thickness. Data were analyzed
using SPSS software.
Results: LNG-IUS significantly reduced menstrual blood loss, with 81.6% of women reporting
normal flow at 6 months. Hemoglobin levels improved, and endometrial thickness decreased.
Patient satisfaction was high, with minimal adverse effects reported.
Conclusion: LNG-IUS is a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for AUB, offering an
alternative to hysterectomy. It improves menstrual patterns and enhances quality of life, making
it a preferred choice for long-term AUB management.
