Clinical Profile and Short-Term Outcomes of Pediatric Status Epilepticus: A CrossSectional Study at a Tertiary Care Centre (Code-T0347)
Keywords:

Introduction: Status epilepticus (SE) is a common paediatric neurological emergency
associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It requires rapid intervention to minimize
adverse outcomes. The incidence is highest in children under two years, often due to
symptomatic causes, genetic/metabolic disorders, or increased seizure susceptibility in the
developing brain.
Aims and Objectives:
Aims: To assess the clinical profile and clinical outcome of children admitted with status
epilepticus.
Primary Objectives
To assess the clinical features& outcome in children admitted with status epilepticus..
Secondary Objectives
To determine the risk factors associated with poor clinical outcomes among children admitted
with status epilepticus.
Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted over 18 months in the
paediatric ward and intensive care unit. Children aged 1 month to 12 years diagnosed with SE
were included. Clinical characteristics, seizure etiology, treatment responses, and short-term
outcomes were recorded. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: The study included 85 children with SE. Acute symptomatic causes, including CNS
infections and febrile seizures, were predominant. Approximately 60% of cases responded to
benzodiazepines, while refractory SE was observed in a significant proportion. Factors such
as prolonged seizure duration, delayed treatment, and underlying neurological conditions
were associated with poor outcomes. Mortality was primarily linked to acute symptomatic
etiologies.
Conclusion: SE in children remains a critical condition requiring early identification and
prompt management. Timely treatment reduces complications and improves outcomes.
Preventive measures, including better management of CNS infections and febrile seizures,
are essential.
