Synopsis

Introduction: Appendectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide. With the advent of minimally invasive techniques, laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) has become increasingly popular. However, the debate continues regarding the relative benefits of open appendectomy (OA) versus laparoscopic approaches, particularly in terms of surgical duration and quality.

Aim and Objectives: To compare the laparoscopic appendectomy and open appendectomy outcome in patients of acute appendicitis in terms of Postoperative quality of life Postoperative pain, Amount of Narcotics/Analgesics used, Hospital stay, Time to full recovery.

Methods: We conducted an observational study at a tertiary care hospital involving 110 patients undergoing appendectomy for acute appendicitis. The cohort was divided into two groups: 55 patients underwent OA, while 55 patients underwent LA. Data on the duration of the procedure, intraoperative complications, post-operative recovery, and the incidence of post-operative infections were collected and analyzed.

Results: The laparoscopic group showed a significantly longer operative duration compared to the open group (mean difference of 22 minutes). However, the laparoscopic group had a faster recovery time, lower complication rates, and a shorter hospital stay. Both groups had similar post-operative infection rates, with no significant differences in long-term outcomes.

Conclusion: Laparoscopic appendectomy offers advantages in terms of post-operative recovery and surgical quality, despite its longer operative duration. Open appendectomy remains a reliable and effective option, especially in cases of complicated appendicitis. The choice of technique should depend on patient condition and surgeon expertise.
