Synopsis

Introduction: Hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, is a common procedure for various gynecological conditions in premenopausal women. While the physical outcomes of the surgery are well-documented, its impact on the quality of life (QoL) and sexual function remains an area of ongoing research. This study aims to evaluate how hysterectomy influences these aspects in premenopausal women.

Aim and Objectives:

Aim: To analyse the impact of hysterectomy on the quality of life and sexual function in  premenopausal women.

Objectives:

Primary- To assess the effect of hysterectomy on quality of life and sexual function of a premenopausal female.

Secondary: To study patterns of regret or content after hysterectomy.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 premenopausal women who underwent hysterectomy at a tertiary care hospital. Participants were evaluated using validated questionnaires to measure QoL and sexual function, including the SF-36 (Short Form 36) for general QoL and the FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index) for sexual health. Data were analyzed for significant changes post-surgery and correlated with factors such as age, type of hysterectomy, and post-operative complications.

Results: Results indicated a significant decrease in sexual function, with a majority of participants reporting reduced libido, arousal, and satisfaction post-hysterectomy. Quality of life showed a decline in physical and emotional domains, particularly in women who underwent total hysterectomy compared to those with subtotal procedures. Psychological factors and the presence of post-operative complications also influenced outcomes.

Conclusion: Hysterectomy in premenopausal women is associated with notable declines in both sexual function and quality of life. Psychological well-being and the type of surgery are key factors influencing these outcomes. Counseling and appropriate post-surgical support are essential for improving the post-operative experience and enhancing QoL in these patients.
