To Study Incidence, Clinical Profile, and Outcome of Ectopic Pregnancy Cases in a Tertiary Care Hospital (Code-T0090)
Keywords:
ectopic pregnancy, incidence, pelvic inflammatory disease, methotrexate, risk factors, surgical managementSynopsis
Introduction: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is the implantation of a fertilized ovum outside the uterine cavity, primarily in the fallopian tubes. It remains a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, with a rising incidence globally and regionally. This study aims to evaluate the clinical spectrum, associated risk factors, and outcomes of EP in a tertiary care setting.
Aims and Objectives:
Aims
To evaluate incidence, clinical features, risk factors, treatment modalities and outcome of ectopic pregnancy in a tertiary care hospital.
Objective:
- To calculate incidence of ectopic pregnancy
- To determine outcome of ectopic pregnancy
Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at Venkateshwar Hospital, New Delhi, from June 2022 to June 2024. Eligible women aged 15-45 years with confirmed EP were included. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, diagnostic modalities, and management approaches (medical or surgical) were collected and analyzed using SPSS v23.0.
Results: Out of 24 patients, the incidence of EP was calculated based on total deliveries during the study period. Risk factors such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), history of prior ectopic pregnancy, and use of assisted reproductive techniques were significant. Medical management with methotrexate was effective in stable cases, while surgical intervention was required for ruptured ectopics. Outcomes included successful fertility preservation in most cases, with minimal morbidity and no reported mortality.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and timely management of EP are crucial to reduce morbidity and ensure favorable outcomes. Enhanced awareness and diagnostic protocols in tertiary care settings can improve patient prognosis.
